CORDOVA — A local man on his way to work late Thursday night reported an unattended fire at the end of Sunday School Road near Cordova.
Richmond County emergency dispatchers alerted volunteers with Cordova Fire and Rescue and County Ranger Matt Gordon of the North Carolina Forest Service at 11:32 p.m. to the blaze, located at the end of Sunday School Road off Dicks Road near Barnhill Contracting’s Rockingham plant. The area is easily accessible off U.S. Route 74 Bypass via Galestown Road.
The dead-end road features access to private property and an area obviously popular with illegal dumping of household trash, roof shingles, broken furniture and more.
When firefighters arrived, there were multiple hot spots with flames showing. They were quickly doused, and Gordon had Earl Graves, also of the Forest Service, bring in a bulldozer to create a fire line for a safe perimeter between the area that burned and the dry trees and shrubs.. Gordon said there was no rain expected for the next 10 days and that high winds were in the forecast for Friday.
