Ronnie Caulder, assistant director of facility services, received the 2014 Staff of the Year Award.

“I was shocked and very honored,” said Caulder, who was also a top-three finalist for the same award last year.

“Having been chosen from a pool of people who were all also very deserving was very humbling.”

Individuals who nominated Caulder for the award described him as attentive, quick, and willing to do every task with a smile and good attitude.

“Ronnie is always going above and beyond each task required of him,” read one nomination.

Another stated, “I have witnessed this person’s work ethic every day,” noting Caulder has “always been very professional and conscientious of his duties” and always “takes care of our issues with a smile and pleasant disposition.”

An alumnus of RCC with a degree in industrial maintenance, Caulder has been employed by the college for more than 15 years.

He said his favorite part of his job is getting to interact with students and staff.

“I really enjoy working with the public,” he said. “And I like knowing that what I’m doing is helping others.”

Other candidates for the staff award this year were Melinda Hefferan, faculty administrative assistant, and Patrisha Lunceford, evening facility coordinator.

Sociology instructor Dr. Angie Adams received the 2014 Faculty of the Year Award. Adams was also among the three finalists for this award last year.

Adams started working for RCC in fall 2008 as an adjunct for the developmental reading course. In 2010, she became a full-time sociology instructor.

As a teacher, Adams said she enjoys seeing her students walk across the stage at graduation and reaching their educational goals.

“I enjoy the opportunity I have to help so many students succeed and to see their dreams become a reality,” she said. “I enjoy boosting them up when sometimes a kind word is all that is needed to take a student a long way. In my classroom, I foster an environment in which they feel valued and want to come back.”

Once a student of RCC herself, Adams recently earned a doctorate in higher education from Eastern Carolina University.

Comments included with her nomination described Adams as “bold in her teaching style but humble with her students. She works with her students in any way possible in order for them to succeed at RCC.”

Another nomination noted Adams’ work outside the classroom serving on college committees and completing her doctoral studies. “She is professional, courteous, and a caring colleague who supports others consistently with a listening ear, a helping hand, and a caring heart,” it read.

Other candidates for the faculty award were business instructor Kim Parsons and public services instructor Sheila Regan.

McInnis presented the third annual President’s Award to College & Career Readiness instructor Phillip Covington for his outstanding dedication to his students and the college.

Covington has been an educator for about 32 years, both in North Carolina and in Tennessee. He has 25 years experience working in adult education for both GED and Adult High School programs.

He started working for RCC in January 2008 as an adjunct for an English class. He has been a College & Career Readiness instructor at RCC for over six years.

“What I like most about teaching is, of course, the students I’ve encountered along the way and the opportunity to help them realize and achieve their goals,” Covington said. “Students not only need instruction and information, but also they need an advocate who cheers them along the way and helps build confidence and competence.”

When asked what advice he passes along to his students, Covington said, “I advise my students to do what it takes to make their goals realities. Learn how to balance schoolwork, family responsibilities, jobs and many other daily obligations. Do not be afraid to ask for help and do not be afraid to pass along knowledge you’ve learned to others.

“My job as an educator is to make this happen for my students,” Covington said.
