Officer recovering after three-vehicle crash

A Hamlet Police Department officer is recovering from minor injuries sustained Thursday night in a three-vehicle crash.

Officer James Hooks, who joined the department on March 6 after graduating Basic Law Enforcement Training in December 2013, was responding to a call of a suspect pulling a gun at Steve’s Pizza on East Hamlet Avenue when the incident occurred at the intersection of State Route 177 and McDonald Avenue.

Hamlet_policeCapt. Scott Waters, of the Hamlet Police Department, said the department received the report of the crash at 7:52 p.m. Waters said it was “very fortunate” that no one was seriously injured in the crash, which included the patrol car, a private sedan and an enclosed — but empty — sand truck from Wadesboro-based Lisk Trucking.

“He’s doing well,” Waters said of Hooks, who was treated and released Thursday for “minor lacerations to the forehead and lower extremities. There were a lot of things that fell into place. The man upstairs kept everybody safe. Thank God all parties involved are not seriously injured. The situation could be a whole lot different.”

First Sgt. Andreas Dietrich of the North Carolina State Highway Patrol is handling the investigation. The Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, Hamlet Fire and Rescue and FirstHealth EMS also responded to the scene. Waters said the department also received a call from Rockingham Police Chief Billy Kelly to see if any help was needed.

Waters said officers are “thankful and blessed” to have a close-kit relationship with other first-responders.
