Under the tutelage of James “Master J” Jeter Sr., nearly four dozen American Tae Kwon Do students participated in the inaugural kick-a-thon for six hours on Saturday at Walmart. On Thursday, the students gathered at The Hive Recreation Center to present a check for $3,671.06 to Allison Sweatt and Richmond County Animal Advocates.

RCAA is a nonprofit that aims to help unwanted animals housed at the Richmond County Animal Shelter to find permanent homes. Often, however, they must receive costly medical treatment. RCAA will use the donated funds for vet bills, spay and neuter programs, pulling from shelters and more.

River Thomas, 15, of Rockingham, led all students with 709 kicks. Austin Taylor, 7, also of Rockingham, led all fundraisers by pulling in $600. Karate students solicited pledges of a certain financial amount per kick. Pledges totaled $2,873.60 while donations hauled in the rest.
