Deputies: Suspect admits to meth in car, at two homes

Police always appreciate an honest criminal.

During what was otherwise a routine traffic stop, Richmond County sheriff’s deputies arrested an Ellerbe man on Oct. 6 on five felonies related to possession and manufacturing of methamphetamine at two places across Richmond County.

Deputies said after William Jacob “Jake” Goins, 24, of Ellerbe, was pulled over for running a red light at Page Street on Main Street in Ellerbe, Goins answered a deputy’s question honestly while pulled over in the grocery store parking lot. Did he have anything illegal in his vehicle?

Yes, Goins said, according to law enforcement. Police said Goins then consented to a search of his vehicle, which yielded drugs and drug paraphernalia.

Additionally, deputies said, Goins said he had more meth at two other locations, including a home on Jones Spring Church Road in Ellerbe and another home on Jessica Avenue in Rockingham. With the help of the State Bureau of Investigaton’s clandestine drug lab special unit, sheriff’s deputies helped take both meth labs out of operation.

Goins was charged with possession and manufacturing of methamphetamines and keeping his 1998 Toyota Sienna van for using controlled substances, which is a violation of the North Carolina Controlled Substances Act. He also also charged with running a red light and driving without wearing a seatbelt.

He appeared before a Richmond County magistrate and held at the Richmond County Jail on a $10,000 secured bond.

A 34-year-old Hamlet man has been arrested on six felony counts related to possession and attempted distribution of cocaine from a Charlotte Street home.

Shannon Torrell “Shag” Harrington was arrested Oct. 12 and held on $25,000 secured bond. He is scheduled to appear on Oct. 23 in Richmond County District Court.

Collins charged with selling Oxycodone

Richmond County sheriff’s deputies reported the arrest of Scotty Monroe Collins, 38, of Mill Road in East Rockingham, for selling prescription drugs.

Authorities said Collins intended to sell six Oxycodone pills, a drug that is included in the state’s Controlled Substances Act, between March 6 and June 21.

Collins was charged with selling/delivering Schedule II controlled substance and possession with intent to distribute. He was arrested on Sept. 22 and held at Richmond County Jail on $10,000 secured bond.

Man arrested for on marijuana charges

An Ellerbe man was identified by Richmond County sheriff’s deputies as driving without a valid license.

When Richard Allen Mabe, 49, was pulled over on Oct. 8, deputies found he had 2.5 ounces of marijuana in his possession inside his 1997 Ford F-150. Police allege the vehicle was used for keeping and selling a controlled substance.

From Mabe’s vehicle, police seized a digital scale, a plastic pet food container and drugs/narcotics valued at $315.

Mabe was held on $15,000 secured bond and placed in the Richmond County Jail.
