Danny Bynum ought to have a Facebook page. After all, the Windblow farmer is getting plenty of buzz.

In July, Bynum’s 1948 Allis-Chalmers WF tractor made the front cover of OutreachNC, a magazine devoted to active adultsĀ in the state. More recently, the tractor made the cover of Fastline magazine, a publication dedicated to farmers that is distributed in the Carolinas as well as Virginia, West Virginia, Maryland and Delaware.

Both situations were made possible, Bynum said, because Allis-Chalmers built quality products.

“Everything’s original on it but the tires and the paint,” said Bynum while taking a break from clearing a couple of fallen trees from Bynum Peach Farm, located along Highway 73 East in Windblow. “It’s got the original parts and everything.”

They don’t, he said, make ’em like they used to. Allis-Chalmers manufactured farming equipment and other machinery beginning in 1901 but dissolved through a series of divestitures in the late 1980s and early ’90s. Bynum bought his tractor new in 1948. The modern companies, Bynum said, don’t measure up.

“Everybody likes these John Deere, but they ain’t what they supposed to be,” Bynum said. “They were just built good.”

Bynum’s family came to Windblow beginning with his grandfather, C.H. Bynum, in 1922. The family has farmed ever since.

Bynum’s wife, Sherry, took the photos of the tractor and, for OutreachNC, of Danny sitting on the tractor in front of the peach trees.

OutreachNC magazine contacted him for that story, Bynum said. He and Sherry submitted their tractor photo to Fastline and it was selected as the best among those received.

Bynum regrets only the timing. The peach trees are in the background. The photo was taken in August, but “it should have been in July. That’s when I sell the most peaches.”
