ROCKINGHAM — All Christian Marks needs to do is take a little of his father’s advice.

“Do the best you can,” Marks said his father, Curtis Marks, told him. That’s exactly what the 55-year-old aims to do as he begins a new chapter of his life as owner of Marks’ Floor Covering.

In fact, that’s what the German-born whose family moved to Richmond County when he was 12 months old has been doing ever since going to work with his father, who was a carpenter for the iconic furniture store. Building owner Ken Goodman made the announcement last August and closed the store in November. The furniture store had been in Goodman’s family for 72 years and a fixture at that location for 90 years.

Growing up, Marks said, he would accompany his father to work and ended up learning the trade. It’s a trade and reputation Marks built, largely upon quality work and customer service, that Goodman believes will serve Marks well in this new venture. Marks worked for Goodman as an independent contractor for the past 30 years.

“I had second thoughts about it,” said Marks, who acknowledged his ability to sell, install flooring and relate to customers. “It’s all going to be new to me.”

But he became convinced it was the right thing to do with a little prodding from Goodman and solid customer base. Goodman said he believes customers will return once they learn its Marks’ operation.

“People have a history of coming” here,” Goodman said of the downtown location.

As for the customers, “they’re the reason I’m opening the store,” Marks said.

The five parcels remain for sale — list price of $550,000 — but could be divided up if the right situation comes along, Goodman said.

The feedback from the customers who encouraged him to open the retail store, which will service the commercial and residential sectors and offer vinyl, carpet, laminate, hardwood and more, made the move much easier. Marks will have only a portion of the structure at first, and fill 2,800 square feet with floor samples and a desk for his staff of one.

There’s room for expansion, Goodman said, “if he needs it.”

“I’m betting he’ll need the (extra) room eventually,” Goodman said.

Goodman said Marks has long relied on a sense of pride that comes with a job well done.

“The biggest headache (as a retailer) with carpet is getting it installed,” Goodman said.

When Marks came to work for him, “I stopped getting complaints,” he said. “This guy’s not afraid of work.”

For a brief moment, Goodman considered keeping R.W. Goodman Co. operating solely as a carpet store, but “if you’re out of business, you’re supposed to be out of business,” said the state representative for Richmond County to North Carolina’s General Assembly.

The store opens on the South Lee Street side of the building at 8:30 a.m. Monday. and will be open five days a week until 5:30 p.m. The store phone number is 910-434-8695.

Just Had Christian do my Living Room Carpet & Kitchen Vinyl flooring. Totally satisfied with the price-quality and super ‘service with a smile.’ He was in and out in record time with the best quote in the county. Couldn’t ask for a more pleasant experience.
