ROCKINGHAM — Members of Girl Scout Troop 543, of Rockingham, began soliciting business owners Wednesday for any loose change.

Amanda Jackson, 8, Olivia Jackson, 11, and Dillan Hurd, 11, aren’t scrounging money up for their next trip to Biscuitville. Instead, the three young ladies are raising money to buy supplies in order to build a permanent fire pit at Place of Grace tent city on Airport Road in East Rockingham.

Place of Grace is a place of temporary housing for homeless men, women and children in Richmond County operated by Mark Joplin and other volunteers with Transitional Services of Richmond County. The area opened up for guests earlier this month.

The girls estimate the project will cost approximately $269. They’ll need 65 retaining wall blocks, four packs of Sakrete adhesive, six marble rock slabs, 15 retaining wall caps and one can of paint to paint the accompanying benches.

Troop Leader Tanya Jackson said the girls will be collecting donations until the the goal is reached.

In addition, members of Troop 543 are collecting a variety of items in order to make gift bags for children who are in the hospital for the holidays and for children living at Place of Grace. The girls are seeking pillow pets (small or large, new or gently used), coloring books, crayons, colored pencils, glue, scissors, puzzles, small crafts and construction paper.
