CHERAW, S.C. — The Cheraw Fish Hatchery, one of five in the state, is hosting a free youth fishing rodeo on Saturday, Sept. 13.

The hatchery is located at 433 Fish Hatchery Lane, five miles south/southwest of the town of Cheraw adjacent to U.S. Highway 1.fishing

There are two 90-minute sessions: From 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 9:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. The rodeo is for youth ages 6 to 15. No adult fishing is allowed, though an adult must accompany a minor. Pre-registration is required as spaces are limited.

Anglers must bring their own fishing equipment and tackle. No minnows allowed.

The Cheraw Fish Hatchery was constructed in 1937 with Federal Funds and assigned to the state for operation and maintenance. However, the facility was returned to the Federal Government in fiscal year 1947/48. and was renamed Cheraw National Fish Hatchery.

Ownership of the hatchery was returned to the state in 1983 as part of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s effort to reduce warmwater hatchery operations throughout the Federal system.
