It appears the Parvo outbreak at the Richmond County Animal Shelter, discovered about a week ago, was caught early.
Shelter Director Rebecca Davis and others worked to contain the infection to nine dogs, all of which had to be put down. County Manager Rick Sago said the shelter reopened for public use, including drop-offs, on Tuesday at noon as scheduled. The shelter had been closed since last Tuesday because of the Parvo outbreak.
“The shelter is back open and it has been cleaned and disinfected and we will continue to monitor the situation,” Sago told The Pee Dee Post by email.
The Parvo virus is “an acute, highly contagious disease of dogs that was first described in the early 1970s. The virus has a tendency to attack rapidly reproducing cells, such as those lining the gastrointestinal tract.”
As of Sept. 9, the shelter census included 63 dogs and 61 cats.
