Staff report

DeLani Reep, 13, of Hamlet, represented Richmond County at the fifth annual North Carolina Association of County Commissioners Youth Summit.

The event was held Aug. 15 and Aug. 16 in Asheville. North Carolina 4-H and the North Carolina Cooperative Extension Service joined for the fifth year with the NCACC on a multi-year initiative to increase youth involvement in county government. This initiative aims to overcome the mindset that many youth are disengaged and lack trust in government.

Over 100 youth and adults from 85 counties in North Carolina attended this event. The event is sponsored and supported by the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners.

DeLani, an eighth-grader at Hamlet Middle School, has been showing meat goats with Richmond County 4-H for seven years. She said it was originally her older sister Kristi — at age 16, she serves as the District 4-H president — but Kristi couldn’t go.

“It seemed fun,” she said. “I had a great time.”

DeLani said the two-day event featured workshops and a tour of downtown Asheville, including the drum circle and jail.

DeLani and other teens enjoyed breakfast with Richmond County Commissioners Thad Ussery and Don Bryant. DeLani said she and Bryant discussed safe driving for teens and was inspired to begin something here at home on that subject.

While participating in 4-H activities, DeLani  maintains an A/B Honor Roll — since the third grade. She also participates in Girl Scouts, is active in raising funds for the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life and active at church as well. Along with her older sister Kristi, younger brother Tobey Lunceford, 8, also participates in 4-H.

The 4-H program is the youth education program of North Carolina Cooperative Extension, based at North Carolina State and North Carolina A&T State universities. More than 227,780 young people ages 5 through 18 participate in North Carolina 4-H activities each year with the help of more than 20, 330 adult and youth volunteers.
