MARSTON, N.C. — Mrs. Lois Hunter McKay Smith, 86, of Marston, passed away Wednesday, Aug. 6, 2014 at First Health Moore Regional Hospital in Pinehurst.

Mrs. Smith was a life-long member of Marston Presbyterian Church, where she was the secretary and treasurer for many years. She also lead Sunday School classes as an active member of Marston Baptist Church with her husband, Claude and other family members. Mrs. Smith served as the secretary at the Marston Broom Factory for a number of years. Later, she continued her education at UNC-Pembroke where she completed her Bachelor’s degree and gained her teaching certificate. She then taught at Richmond Community College as the Guided Studies Director from 1978 to 1991.

Mrs. Smith enjoyed spending time in the yard as an active gardener. Her other interest included; reading, sewing, cooking, shopping, and trips to the beach. She adored her family, and was known to her family and many friends as “Prim” or “Lois Hunter”. 

Funeral services will be conducted 3 p.m. Sunday, August 10, 2014 in the Cole Auditorium on the campus of Richmond Community College with Rev. Dr. Jim Ritter and Rev. Roger Paxton officiating. Entombment will follow at Richmond Memorial Park. 

Mrs. Smith is survived by two daughters, Beverly Smith of Chapel Hill and Claudia S. Robinette (Kenneth) of Marston; two grandchildren, Gabrielle R. Goodwin (Matt) of Rockingham and Neil Robinette (Catherine) of Pinehurst; one great granddaughter, Madelyn Goodwin; a brother, Frank McKay (Pam) of Marston; and a nephew, Franklin McKay of Marston.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Claude Smith.

The family will receive friends Saturday evening from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Watson – King Funeral Home in Rockingham and other times at the home.
