LAURINBURG, N.C. — Janet Teller James Lindsey Petris entered into eternal rest on Aug. 20, 2014 at her residence at Scotia Village.

Janet was born April 13, 1923 in Hamlet, to the late Dr. William Daniel James and Lillian Duer James. She was preceded in death by her brother Dr. Bill James, her sister Mary James Howe and her dear friend Melva Hamilton.

She was the loving wife of Paul D. Petris and the late Dr. Mark Lindsey.

She was a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She taught the lessons of kindness and generosity to her sons Mark M. Lindsey, Jr (Mary). of Bennettsville, S.C., William J. Lindsey (Helen) of Durham, and David H. Lindsey (Kimberly) of Hamlet; to her grandchildren Andrew M. Lindsey, Todd H. Lindsey, Sarah Lindsey McCrea (Jon), David C. Lindsey (Lisa) and great grandchildren Sabrina Lindsey, Lindsey McCrea, Elise McCrea, Caroline McCrea, Caleb Vega, and Gavin Lindsey.

She graduated from St. Mary’s School, Raleigh, Mount Vernon Jr. College, UNC-Wilmington, and Hamlet Hospital School of Nursing RN Program. She was a community leader in a day when woman weren’t included in the man’s world. She was a founding board member of Richmond Technical Institute where she served on the board for 25 years and was instrumental in obtaining support for the present site selection of RTI in 1965. She was the Founding President of the Richmond Community Foundation. A nurse herself, she spoke often of her love for the medical field, her family’s medical legacy, and of the RCC nursing program – the development of which was helped by her dedication and support.

She served on the Hamlet Recreation Board, Hamlet Library Board, Hamlet Red Cross Committee (president), Hamlet Hospital Board and was a Cub Scout Den Mother for many years. Wherever she resided, her heart was always in Hamlet.

Services will be held Saturday, Aug. 23 at the First Presbyterian Church in Hamlet at 11 a.m. Visitation begins at 10:15 a.m. in the Church Sanctuary. Interment will be at 2:30 p.m. at Hillside Cemetery in Laurinburg.

In lieu of flowers, gifts are requested to be made to the Richmond Community College Foundation – Janet James Lindsey Petris Scholarship, PO Box 1189, Hamlet NC 28345.
