ROCKINGHAM — It’s the kind of music that you can’t help but sing along with — even if you don’t know all the words.

And if you don’t know any of the words, just dance.

That’s what 5-year-old Cayden Young, of Ellerbe, had in mind to do with his GiGi, Rosann Gerald. Away from the main body, Cayden and Gerald danced the evening away with nary a thought for the right words or even if a step or two was out of sync.

The Charlotte-based beach music band Too Much Sylvia ended up being background noise to the enjoyment of many who came to dance or socialize by reuniting with old friends or meeting new ones. After all, it’s Plaza Jam at Cole Plaza in downtown Rockingham

“I brought him out here to have fun,” Gerald did.

It’s the kind of place, said said one band member, in which “a 60-year-old white man can go, ‘oy! oy!,” with the last part in a whooping or hollering-good-time kinda voice.

Each Plaza Jam, a free six-performance summer concert series coordinated by the city of Rockingham, is from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. and is free to the public. The remaining schedule includes Fantastic Shakers on Sept. 4 and the Craig Woolard Band on Oct. 2.
