HAMLET — Being a teacher can sometimes seem a difficult, if not overwhelming task. At the low points, it’s nice for one teacher to know another teacher’s got his back.

That’s part of the point of team building skills taken on by veteran and new teachers alike from the Ninth Grade Academy on Wednesday at Big Pine Retreat in Hamlet. Principal Pamela Patterson led, and the others followed suit in tackling a high ropes course, zip line and more.

One obstacle had staff members pick and and nudge through a rope obstacle a few feet off the ground. If any part of the person going through the obstacle touched the rope, the team had to start the exercise over.

Teachers new to the county school system participated in team-building exercises earlier this week. Returning teachers at Richmond Senior School are expected to participate on Friday.

Neely Sullivan, a health and physical education teacher at Ninth Grade Academy, said the activities help build trust and cohesion among colleagues and show that each person is available to support the other. It also provides opportunities for leadership through various exercises, she said.
