EAST ROCKINGHAM — Law enforcement personnel from three local agencies joined in the search for a suspected armed robber late Saturday night into early Sunday morning in East Rockingham.

Witnesses said a white male dressed in a black ski mask and black gloves displayed a gun and demanded money at One Stop convenience store on Airport Road. The suspect fled without getting any money, said store clerk Allie Turner.

A Rockingham Police Department K-9 unit was deployed in East Rockingham late Saturday night from Flowers Street in search of an armed robbery suspect.

Her husband, Howard Turner, was visiting the store when the suspect appeared. He said a man came in dressed in all black, displayed a gun and shouted, “Gimme the money!”

After multiple requests, Howard Turner said he hit the panic button to alert authorities. Deputies, witnesses said, arrived “within 30 seconds.”

“Some idiot met the wrong redneck,” Turner said.

A search of the nearby area included Rockingham Police Department officers positioned on Marigold and Flowers streets, including a K-9 unit, a Hamlet Police Department officer and at least one Richmond County Sheriff’s Office cruiser.

No money was stolen, witnesses said, and no one appeared to be injured.

It was at least the second robbery attempt of the store, which is open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, in two months. In June, witnesses said a man matching a similar description as Saturday’s suspect  brandished a hand gun and demanded money.
