The Rockingham 14-year-old All-Stars have advanced in the Pony League District Tournament at Kiwanis Park in Asheboro after dominating, but close, wins Wednesday and Thursday.
On the mound Wednesday, both Drew Loving and Drew Grant pitched three innings of no-hit baseball. Each hurler struck out eight and walked no one as Rockingham dominated, 6-1.
Justin Ingram pitched the seventh inning and allowed Asheboro’s only hit of the game. Ingram also struck out one in his only inning on the mound.
At the plate, Chase Puckett, Tyler Blunt, Camerson Carraway and Alex Anderson each had RBI hits for Rockingham. Grant and Loving added one hit apiece for Rockingham’s offense.
On Thursday, the pitching dominance continued as Ingram tossed a complete-game two-hitter, striking out seven and allowing two seventh-inning hits in Rockingham’s 3-0 victory.
Rockingham’s offense had only two hits and scored all three of its runs on squeeze plays. Ingram and Nolan Allen had one hit each for Rockingham.
“We can run five pitchers out there and feel very confident” of victory, said coach Robbie Allen.
Rockingham, the only undefeated team in the tournament, plays Asheboro at 6 p.m. and Bennett at 8 p.m. in the round robin tournament. A tournament championship will qualify the team for the regional tournament in Davidson that begins Tuesday.
