CORDOVA — Nearly 20 Piedmont Natural Gas employees helped kick off the United Way of Richmond County campaign on Monday by donating time and labor to three projects at Cordova School.

The day started with a breakfast and motivational session at the Piedmont Natural Gas office at 325 Old Charlotte Highway. It was a time, said Sam Smith, to reflect on what United Way has done for Richmond County and surrounding counties with donations from Piedmont Natural Gas employees.
After the morning meal, work crews arrived at Cordova School to construct a pre-fabricated greenhouse and dig a jump pit for student-athletes to practice jumping for Special Olympics events. Vulcan Material Co., of Winston-Salem, donated the sand.
A two-man PNG crew also painted 10 exterior doors on the school building.
Smith said the company rewards employees who agree to donate one hour’s pay each month to United Way of Richmond County with eight hours paid time off. Many employees use that time to volunteer for service projects like those completed on Monday in Cordova.
“What a great group of guys,” said Michelle Parrish, local United Way executive director.
