Obituary: Bettie B. Freeman

HAMLET, N.C. — Bettie B. Freeman of Hamlet passed away Tuesday, July 1, 2014 surrounded by family.

“Bettie B.” was active in the community as a member at Second Baptist Church and The Shriner Sandbells along with numerous other service groups. Whether on Main Street selling funnel cakes at the Seaboard Festival or a quick stop at her favorite shops Hamlet’s Produce or Hamlet Hardware, you were sure to be greeted by her slightly crooked smile, jovial nature and a witty remark matched by no other.

Bettie served the community for 32 years as a nurse at Hamlet Hospital after beginning nurses training in September 1950. She was a devoted wife to David C. Freeman and loving Mother to Becky Whitaker and Gail Wise (Robin).

Affectionately known throughout the community as “Granny,” her grandchildren include Dacote Whitaker (Michelle), Marie Whitaker-Bukowski (Bryan), Jessica Bussey (Mark), Jennifer Hammargren (Ben) and Jason Wise (Alexis). A Great-Grandmother to Ryan Nelson, Atticus & Callie Jane Wise, Savannah & Scarlet Bussey, Eli Hammargren and Emelia Faye Whitaker. Bettie is survived by her siblings Hubert Brice (Bonnie), Mary Yongue (George) and beloved nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by Mildred London, Harold Brice, Richard Brice, Joe Brice, James Brice and Barbara Brice.

A celebration of her life is scheduled for Thursday, July 3 at Second Baptist Church with a visitation at 12:30 p.m.. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. and burial services immediately to follow at Richmond Memorial Cemetery.
