Long leads Richmond runners in The March 50K

Hamlet resident Mark Long, 55, led the Richmond County contingent in the The March 50-kilometer (31-mile) footrace on Saturday in Raeford.

Long placed 17th among 52 official finishers with a time of 5 hours, 46 minutes and 31 seconds — only a week after completing the Grandfathers Mountain Marathon in Boone.

Lee Watson, 60, also of Hamlet, was second from Richmond County and placed 34th overall in 6:45:30.

Rosemary Baxley, 51, of Hamlet, was the top local female finisher. Baxley, also one week removed from the Grandfathers Mountain Marathon, completed this 31-mile course in 7:22.

The March is organized by the Southern Pines Ultra Running Club. The race is one of nine on the club’s SPUR Cup Series.

The March takes place at The All-American Trail, an unpaved pathway designed for hikers, runners and cyclists. The trail follows the perimeter of Fort Bragg through North Carolina’s Sandhills region. The terrain is mixed with sections that range from nearly flat to fairly hilly with some loose sand at points.

There is a 1,000-foot boardwalk that crosses Rockfish Creek and its wetlands.
