ROCKINGHAM — National Diesel Hot Rod Association point leader Trey Sikes tries to leverage his “home field advantage” this week when he defends his Sportsman event title in the NDHRA Carolina Nationals at Rockingham Dragway.

Sikes, who lives just a couple miles from the track in Hamlet, is hoping to lock up his first national championship at the wheel of his 2010 Volkswagen Jetta station wagon.

In addition to drag racing action in six different NDHRA classes, the event also will include a full complement of sled pulling events, a burnout contest and a Show ‘N Shine competition for diesel cars and trucks.

Quickest and fastest of the diesel-powered vehicles is the dragster of Jared Jones of Terre Haute, Ind., which has covered the quarter mile course in an NDHRA record 6.466 seconds at 225.30 miles per hour.

Other point leaders hoping to clinch at The Rock include Jones in Top Diesel, Ryan “The Hard Way” Milliken of Navarre, Fla., with Dodge Ram trucks in both Pro Stock and Super Street, Jarid “the Iron Man” Vollmer of Chubbuck, Idaho, in Pro Street and Ryan Dubois of Boise, Idaho in Super Diesel.
