Ferguson: ‘Planes’ shows people can make a difference

What happens when your chances of being a racer are put in jeopardy and your home town is in trouble?
If you are Dusty Crophopper in the new Disney movie “Planes: Fire and Rescue” you volunteer for training with a strong willed and passionate group of firefighters. Since the last installment of “Planes,” Dusty (voice of Dane Cook) has become a world famous racer and is bringing prestige to his small town. However, during a test flight, he learns that his engine has been damaged and he may never race again.

When he finds out that his town’s firefighting resources are out dated and the town will closes without them, he volunteers to train with aerial firefighters protecting the historic Piston Peak National Park so he can become the town’s second firefighter. He joins forces with veteran fire-and-rescue helicopter Blade Ranger (voice of Ed Harris) and his courageous team, including spirited air tanker Dipper (voice of Julie Bowen), heavy-lift helicopter Windlifter (voice of Wes Studi), ex-military transport Cabbie (voice of Captain Dale Dye) and a lively bunch of brave all-terrain vehicles known as The Smokejumpers.

Through sacrifice, team work, and determination, Dusty helps his new friends battle a massive wildfire and learn what being a true hero is all about.
As someone who grew up with firefighters throughout my family, this movie struck a chord with me. Firefighters don’t get a lot of credit for the sacrifices and hard work they do, but this movie shows how hard they have to work to protect us. A firefighter trains to face any fire and any situation while being flexible enough to adjust to changing conditions.
Dusty trains by flying through different conditions and has to figure out how to follow his instincts. They protect people they don’t know from dangers and in doing so put their own lives in harm’s way. Dusty knew that his engine may fail, but he goes into the heart of the fire to save two people he just met. They protect and look out for each other, in an effort to ensure everyone comes home safely. Blade Ranger protected Dusty from the fire when they are trapped, resulting in the burning of some of his outer shell. Dusty then aids him in getting out of the flames and to safety for repairs.
This is the type of movie that inspires the viewers to believe that people can make a difference. I encourage families to see it together and remember that real heroes don’t wear capes, some wear air packs.
