ROCKINGHAM — Nearly 150 cheerleaders from ages 3 through high school participated in the end-of-program showcase to cap the week-long Richmond Raiders Cheer Camp.

The group wasn’t loud — it was boisterous.

Hamlet Middle School earned “Most Spirited” honors, though the competition was close. Selected individuals took turns competing for bragging rights in several skill sets, including jumps and tumbles, before full squads centered themselves on the blue performance mat to conduct a complete routine, one part cheer and one part dance, accompanied by music.

The stands were nearly 50 percent full of family teachers, administrators and school board members, among others. The turnout was perhaps an indication that Richmond County is ready for fall sports to begin — even if students and teachers aren’t yet ready for classes to resume.
