Staff report
A three-county, two-state police investigation led to the arrest of two women wanted in connection with theft of personal property from a Hamlet property owner.
Elizabeth Dale Hailey, 34, of Holden Beach, and Lisa English Norton, 47, of Hamlet, have been charged with felony larceny and conspiracy to commit felony larceny. Richmond County sheriff’s deputies arrested both women late Wednesday night. They are currently being confined at the Richmond County Jail. Hailey is being held on $28,000 secured bond and Norton is being held on $8,000 secured bond.
Acting Hamlet Police Chief Rodney Tucker said the investigation began when a Hamlet property owner, a man, reported to police that two women could have stolen his moped. The man indicated the women had approached his home the night before looking for money.
During the investigation, Hamlet investigators learned the women had been in Scotland County trying to sell a moped. They also learned that the women were staying in Marlboro County (S.C.) and had been seen on Highway 38, again asking for money.
Authorities found the stolen moped in a junk yard in Scotland County, to which one of the women had allegedly sold it. Warrants were issued July 25 for their arrest.
The stolen property was returned to the homeowner.
