TROY — Both the Rockingham Angels and the Darlings, ages 9-10 and 7-8, respectively, advanced to the district championship games Monday evening at Peabody Community Park in Troy.

The Angels won via the 10-run rule against West Stanly. The offensive attack was led by Jakerra Covington’s grand slam. Covington reached base twice, the second time on a walk, and scored both times.

The Angels took advantage of eight walks issued by West Stanly pitchers. On the mourn for Rockingham, starting pitcher Kearston Bruce tossed two innings and struck out four in the win. Payton Chappell came on in relief and struck out three batters on 10 pitches to clinch the victory.

Rockingham advances to the district title game at 8 p.m. Monday against Montgomery County — the team the Angels beat Saturday night.

“They’ll have to beat us twice,” said coach Scott Frye of the double-elimination tournament. “We got no losses, they got one.”

The Angels have yet to allow a run in three postseason games, winning by a combined 29-0.
