TROY — Big hits. Little hits.

When the Rockingham Ponytails needed them, they got them.

The Ponytails swept a doubleheader on Sunday at Peabody Community Park in Troy to advance to the 11-12 district tournament title game. Rockingham won 10-0 against West Stanly in Game 1 and won Game 2 behind a two-hit shutout by Jenna Greene.

The Ponytails will play West Stanly again Monday for the championship, but if it’s anything like early Sunday afternoon it’s likely to be over before fans finish their first hot dog.

In Game 1 on Sunday, Rockingham ran roughshod over West Stanly and scored in all three innings of play — three in the first, one in the fourth and six in the bottom of the third to seal the win by the 10-run rule.

Savanna Barber put the Ponytails up 2-0 in the first with an one-out RBI single to centerfield. After a strikeout, Barber scored on a passed ball for a 3-0 Rockingham lead.

It didn’t get any better for West Stanly. After a relatively quiet second inning — Carley Lambeth walked and later scored on a passed ball for a four-run advantage — the game got away from West Stanly in the bottom of the third.

Ragan Liles gave Rockingham a 6-0 lead with an RBI single. Barber then doubled to left, scoring Liles for a 7-0 lead. Carley Lambeth added an RBI single with two outs for a 9-0 advantage.

Liles and Alyssa Seaboldt combined to hurl the shutout. Offensively, Barber and Emily Faw each went 2-for-2, including a double for Barber. The Ponytails tallied 10 hits in the three-inning game.

R’ham 2, Montgomery County 0

Jenna Greene tossed a complete-game shutout to lead Rockingham to a 2-0 win over Montgomery County and a berth in the title game Monday night.

Paige Ransam had two of her team’s four hits in the win. Ragan Liles and Alyssa Seaboldt added one hit apiece.

The Ponytails scored in the second when Ransam led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice bunt.

In the 5th inning, the Ponytails took a 2-0 lead on a walk by Jayana Nicholson. Two sacrifice bunts allowed her to crossed home plate.
