HAMLET — Hamlet Depot and Museums Manager Miranda Chavis had a surprise visit by one of the city’s pillars.

Earl Bradshaw, 98, stopped by to show Chavis a couple of photos — one of today, and one less recent.

First up, said Brashaw, was a photo of his double-paned sliding glass door that had fractured after heat built up in between the panes.

The second photo showed his family’s grocery store, once located on Highway Business 74 at King Street behind the new laundromat.

Chavis said Bradshaw has assisted in museum tours. His talks, she said, focus on his life as a railroad yard fireman in Hamlet, a career that began some 70 years ago.

Bradshaw said that “everything in my lifetime has changed” about not only the railroad but, well, everything.

We’re guessing that includes the concept of a digital newspaper and using an iPhone to take his photo.
