ELLERBE — Mayor Lee Berry and the Ellerbe Town Council approved on Monday night its Fiscal Year 2015 budget with a continued focus on police and fire protection and street repairs and maintenance.

The new financial year begins July 1. The tax rate will be 50 cents per $100 of valuation of property listed for taxes as of Jan. 1, 2014.

Police ($180,000), fire ($143,000) and streets ($98,000) comprise more than 54 percent of the $776,000 budget — and 57.8 percent if the $28,000 set aside for firemen state pensions is considered.

Administering the town will cost $149,000 — 19.2 percent — while $25,000 is earmarked for the governing body.

Other key expenditures include:

* $48,000 for sanitation

* $38,000 for the power bill department

* $20,000 for recreation

* $14,280 for the library

* $2,000 each for the rescue squad and beautification

* $1,700 for the Ellerbe meal site

* $1,000 each for Discovery Place KIDS and the cemetery

* $500 for United Way of Richmond County

In other town news, Berry expressed appreciation for the enhanced Hot Mamas Softball League, a recreational program primarily for women ages 35 and older. The second-year league attracted nearly 200 players. Opening Day was Saturday.

Berry said he was in one store in town and saw six women from outside of Ellerbe spending buying goods to be consumed at Parsons Field.
