ROCKINGHAM — If Kids Day at FirstHealth Richmond Memorial Hospital on Saturday was meant to be a period of education and awareness, then consider it mission accomplished.
Fans young and old were able to test out public safety equipment from 9 a.m. to noon in the hospital parking lot along Long Drive in Rockingham.
It was an opportunity for members of public safety agencies, including the East Rockingham Fire Department, Northside Volunteer Fire Department, Richmond Rescue 2, FirstHealth of the Carolinas, Rockingham Police Department and the Richmond County Sheriff’s Office, to interact with the public — and help earn their trust — in a low-key, festive atmosphere.
It was just the type of event Towanda Patterson, of Rockingham, was looking for. Her son, William, 14, was interested in the East Rockinghgam Fire Department’s display, in which William was able to put on all 75 pounds of gear a firefighter has to wear. He also was able to test out some of the functions of different alarms firefighters are trained to respond to.
“This has been the best stop all day,” Towanda Patterson said. “What a learning experience.”
