HAMLET — One motorist passing by the scene of an SUV that had crashed into the Shell station along Highway 177 in Hamlet, about 1 mile south of Highway Business 74, called it “amazing” that no one was injured.

Shell station and convenience store owner John Garner went one better.

“It was a miracle,” said Garner.

Garner said there were five employees and two customers inside the convenience at about 12:50 p.m. Sunday when a forest green Ford Explorer crashed through the front door.

Garner said the driver, a local man who was traveling home from church with his family, explained that his brakes had failed.

“It sounded like an earthquake,” said Garner, who was in the store at the time of the incident.

Garner said the store is expected to be closed between seven and 10 days while repairs are being made. It’s possible that concrete strips will be placed in front of the store parking spaces. That was considered the last time this happened, Garner said, but valuable parking space is lost.

“It look alike it’s going to be a necessity now,” Garner said.

The Hamlet Fire and Rescue Department responded to the scene, as did the Hamlet Police Department and Martins Home Repair Service, of Hamlet.
