National Train Day set for Saturday in Hamlet

National Train Day will be celebrated from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday in Hamlet.

This is a free, family event featuring CSX, Operation Lifesaver, Amtrak and the Richmond County Amateur Radio Club to celebrate how trains move us. The museum is also proud to announce the debut opening of the SAL locomotive in Main Street Park for exploration. The locomotive is courtesy of the National Railroad Museum and Hall of Fame of Hamlet, NC.

Here is a schedule of events:

2 p.m. — Ribbon Cutting Ceremony for the locomotive in Main Street Park. The interior will now be available to the public.

2:30 p.m. — The Great Museum Hunt! The first five riddles will be available at Café on Main. Find the National Train Day Token based on the riddle. Turn in the token to the Café on Main for a prize.

3:30 p.m. — The Great Museum Hunt! The second five riddles will be available in Café on Main. Find the National Train Day Token based on the riddle. Turn in the token to Café on Main for a prize!

4 p.m. — Trainspiration Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest in Main Street Park. Draw how trains inspire you on the sidewalk in Main St. Park.

4:30 p.m. — Trainspiration Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest in Main St. Parkrett Winner will be announced.

5 p.m. — Winner announced for the Amtrak Ticket Giveaway in Main Street Park.

National Train Day Activities

  • The official opening of the SAL locomotive!
  • The Hamlet Depot & Museums will be open with volunteers running the Model Railroad Exhibits!
  • Get an up close look at the Fire truck!
  • Railroad games and prizes from Operation Lifesaver.
  • Free face painting. The Great Museum Hunt! Trainspiration Sidewalk Chalk Art Contest.
  • Amtrak giveaways and activity sheets.
  • CSX will talk about trains today and offer giveaways!
  • Join the Richmond County Amateur Radio Club to talk to people from around the country or learn morse code!
  • Food will be available in Main St. Park and at Café on Main.
