RICHMOND COUNTY — City and rural carriers in Hamlet and Rockingham will participate in the 22nd annual Letter Carriers Food Drive this Saturday throughout Richmond County.
The carriers will collect nonperishable food items on their designated routes. All food collected will be take to Our Daily Bread Food Bank of Rockingham.
Clifton Garrison, of the Rockingham Post Office, said carriers will begin distributing special plastic bags this week during normal delivery times to residents’ homes. Those bags, then, can be filled with unopened, unused or unwanted nonperishable food items to be given to the food bank through post office employees.
Letter carriers will deliver the donated items to the Rockingham Post Office on Saturday afternoon. Volunteers with the food bank will come on Tuesday to pick up the donated items.
Garrison said Richmond County residents last year donated 19,889 pounds of food.
“Each year, we’ve been improving,” Garrison said, “so hopefully we can do better.”
