City Planner John Massey said Tuesday morning that the project is on schedule but no agreements have been signed with any entity. He said there has been some discussion with a restaurant owner but no deal has been reached.

Massey said he’s heard some of the rumors, including that that space could be taken by a Denny’s or a Cracker Barrell. Not true, he said.

Oakboro-based Carpenter Construction was awarded the $806,831 project, funded primarily by two major grants — $475,000 from the Cole Foundation and $281,331 from the Richmond Community Foundation — and is on a 240-day timeline. Work is expected to be completed in late 2014.

We all know that a Denny’s or Cracker Barrel isn’t coming to Rockingham. And a popular name brand restaurant will not move into the downtown area. A Chik-Fil-A is needed, but I doubt it ever comes to Rockingham. Once again our money and tax dollars are spent in Moore County at Cracker Barrel, Chik-Fil-A, and now Buffalo Wild Wings..
