Despite threatening gray skies lingering after a night of soaking rain and thunderstorms, golfers weren’t about to led the opportunity to play a few holes pass by. Emily Tucker, chamber president, said the larger-than-usual turnout was possibly a result of fewer tournaments in the area. She noted other Richmond County nonprofits no longer staged golf tournaments as fundraisers.

People are tired of being cooped up inside, Tucker said, and they’re “trying to get out.”

The 18-hole tournament featured a new twist in its ninth year. Tucker explained that for the first time, a traveling trophy would be awarded to the winning four-person team, decided between the winners of the morning and afternoon flights. Tucker said while some golfers are out for the fun and social engagement, others look are keeping eye on the leader board.

“We have some that are competitive,” she said.

The traveling trophy will be engraved with the team’s name and its members and will be placed at the team’s business office until the 2015 scramble.
