ROCKINGHAM, 12:46 p.m. — The National Weather Service has issued a wind advisory that will be in effect until 7 tonight.

The wind is already starting to pick up — as indicated by a sheet metal sign ripped off the former Classic Apparel building in downtown Rockingham at the corner of East Washington at South Lawrence streets.

The National Weather Service predicts that behind a cold front, strong northwest winds will develop … peaking during the afternoon hours and then gradually diminishing during the evening. Chance of rain is 20 percent.

While the high reached nearly 60 today, the cold front is expected to bring overnight lows to about 26 degrees with a high Tuesday of 47.

Winds will increase from west to east across the area, peaking across the western Piedmont between noon and 4 p.m. and peaking across the eastern Piedmont and Coastal Plain between 2 p.m. and 6 p.m.

Sustained winds could range between 15 mph and 25 mph, with gusts between 35 mph and 45 mph at times.

Forecasters warn of possible downed trees or limbs, which could result in isolated power outages.

In addition, “very windy conditions will make driving difficult … especially for high profile vehicles.”
