Washington Street Elementary School hosted a science night on Oct. 16 for their students and parents.
To begin with, teachers quickly introduced the science standard and topic for the grade level. Then, guided by their teachers, children and adults performed experiments like making “Gloop” which is a solid and a liquid. They also made root beer floats to show the three forms of matter (soda- liquid, ice cream-solid, when the soda fizzes-gas).
Another grade level discussed chemical changes and demonstrated three different changes: heat emission, gas formation, and color change. They also had the families make their own slime! Still another grade level did reflection and refraction observations/experiments as well as a chemical reaction demonstration of Elephant Toothpaste.
Our kindergarten families used pumpkins to better understand positional words by placing pumpkins on a fence according to directions. They also had children identify their five senses by experimenting with various objects.
And finally, children learned about force and motion by creating marshmallow shooters and launching them in front of the school.
